Dang, I must've gotten a flop 12 Pro then. This thing overheats like my Androids did 6-10 years ago and I still have to keep it plugged in all day to make it through the day. Plus I get the lag when overheating. This is my first iPhone and I've definitely felt disappointed, it performs like a few generation old Android most of the time. You're only one generation chip behind (A14 vs A15 on iPhone 13 and 14) - and that chip is still a beast. Yes, the newer models offer some improvements here and there, but the iPhone 12 still does very well. And you still get great features like a high quality OLED display and Face ID.
The iPhone 12 has much better technology & will last 5 years easily. Don't get the iPhone 12 now in 2022. I've been using it since 2 years and the battery life has come down significantly. Performance and everything is great about it but the battery life and 60hz screen are a bit outdated according to me.

It’s hard to offer advice without a budget to go on. If you’re okay spending $200 max, I’d say find a different model for sure. Mine just clapped out so I upgraded to a 14 Pro, but to be honest there’s nothing remarkable about the newer models if you can get a good 11 Pro. I got an 11 pro in 2022 and it works great. Really good camera quality as well. Only downside is trying to find phone cases, you will need to order online.

Yes. You can have a 256 GB SE for less than a 64 GB 12 mini. If storage is important to you that is a big advantage. I used to have the 12 mini. I loved the size but traded it in for the 13 pro bc of battery life (didnt go for 13 mini bc I traded with a family member). My daughter has the se 2020.
