The hired drivers are there only as a money booster, to get virtual money quicker. Much like an "in-game money cheat". Some players do see them as parts in the big trucking empire, but you cannot do anything but hire them, give them a truck and watch that number representing your virtual bank account. These would only count as reasons to have more drivers if you're into achievements, but I am, so I was curious about the max number. EDIT: After a little searching, it seems the max number of drivers is 154, allowing one to have 31 fully staffed garages. Interesting.
AI drivers earn less, you can earn more than freight cargo but that is with specific cargo types and specific trailer configurations. But more importantly, it seems like your play style is a lot like mine. Being that you take out loans and hire drivers and play the game "legit". However, the issue is when playing multiplayer for ATS/ETS2 the time sync is different than singleplayer. So your employees do work for you - however, time needs to pass in order for them to make money.
